Hello, everyone! Once again, it’s been too long since my last SS letter. But this summer, I’ll be better. Why?
Because my sweetie, Chuck, will be working in Lubbock Monday through Friday, at one of the Home Depots there. Another assembler will take over in Hobbs, where Chuck usually puts together grills, toolboxes (some of them taller than he is and wider than he can reach, with two heavy sections, one on top of the other), patio sets, fire rings, log-splitters, and rocking chairs. Not all he assembles, though. There are a lot more. Even lawn tractors!
That means I’ll be home all week without distractions! Well, except for Freddie, Sophie, and Chloe, our indoor kitties.
Which brings me to our latest big thing. Porch kitties.
Years ago, we had maybe half a dozen porch kitties. This year, there were 27. No, that isn’t a typo. Thirteen viable female adult cats and fourteen kittens, all born within the same 2 weeks. Thanks to our come and go tomcats, Tommy, Sam, Sammy, Sunny, Tab, and Peaches (we thought he was female).
Too many, and the females were going into heat again. They usually have four kittens each.
So, the decision was made to rehome ALL of our females and kittens, which we’ve done. The animal control lady, Helen, let us keep four of her live traps for a week. We have only two females and two kittens left. Tommy, Sammy, and Sunny are still here part of the day. They have to be really confused! There were girls with lovely perfume all over the place, and now they’re gone!
Where did they go? To a family in the country who said, “We want all 27!” We could’ve let Helen take them to the shelter, but the amazing kitty-loving family FEEDS their cats and provides a shelter for them! Helen was glad she did have to take them to the shelter, then to a farmer in need of barn cats, and we were happy, knowing they’d have food, water, and shelter, without having to rely on mice.
Best of all, we won’t have to start eating canned beans, since feeding 27 outdoor cats and 3 indoor cats….
After the remaining mamas and babies have time to forget the traps and seeing their friends trying desperately (for about 15 minutes before settling) to escape, we’ll borrow two of Helen’s traps and send the lonesome four to join their friends.
Now, we can scrub the (once) white faux-wicker plastic rockers and the table that sets between them, then spray paint them white again. And I’ll be able to sit on the porch early each morning, which hasn’t been possible for years.
Oh! We can feed hummingbirds again! Wow! And keep water in our birdbath! Another Wow!
By the way, throughout 54 years of marriage, every last dog and cat we’ve had was a rescue. We’re proud of that. Way too many to count.
Watch for another letter from Linda’s Heart with specials on the first two books in the Kiss Me Series, which are being resurrected! Also, the song that inspired me to write the first book, KISS ME, CHLOE. I’ll soon be publishing the third book in the series—a brand new book!—KISS ME, CINDY.
Hugs and Happiness!
Linda
And I thought five dogs was excessive 🤣
